Thorobreds Suffer Home Loss to Fort Valley State

Box Score Frankfort, Ky. (January 17, 2012) – The Kentucky State University Thorobreds took action in William Exum Gymnasium against the Fort Valley State University Wildcats in a conference matchup. The Wildcats started the game with eight quick points in the paint, but the Breds got on the board with a jumper in the paint by John Gaston.

Four minutes into the game, senior William Marsh hit a 3-pointer making the score 5-8. With 11:20 left in the first half, Marsh went to the line and sunk two free throws to put the Breds up 14-13.  The game stayed tight for two minutes until the Breds went on a 10-4 run. With 6:40 left in the first half, the Wildcats hit back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game at 29-29.

The teams went back and forth with baskets keeping the score tight until two minutes left in the half. Fort Valley's Joshua Davis made two free throws and a layup to put the Wildcats up by four. Julian McDonald then hit a jumper to give FVSU a 46-40 lead. Gaston was fouled with 00:29 left in the half and made both free throws, then a technical foul sent Marsh to the line to sink two free throws. At the half, the Breds trailed the Wildcats 45-47.

Fort Valley's Kenneth Simmons came out the second half on fire with nine points and a rebound in three minutes. Brandon Darrett and Patrick Dawson both got rebounds and put points on the board for the Breds with 16:19 left in the game. Later in the game, Troy Adams and Markus Montague both sunk free throws to pull the Breds within one, but Wildcat Mitchell Dixon responded with a deep 3-pointer. Fort Valley then went on a 9-2 run with 8:07 left in the game.

KSU continued to play hard, but with 1:44 left in the game, found themselves down by 11 points. Austin Rich made two successful free throws and Marsh hit a 3-pointer to close the gap on the Wildcats' lead. With 00:35 left Adams made two good free throws making the score 78-84. Eight seconds later, Dawson went to the line and successfully made both of his free throws.  Earl Ruffin Jr. made a deep three with 00:14 left bringing the Breds within three. With 00:08 left in the game, Dawson attempted to tie the game with a three but miss and FVSU grabbed the rebound. Despite an exciting ending, KSU was unable to overcome FVSU's sharpshooting. The game ended with the Wildcats' Desman Lofland knocking down two free throws to give FVSU a 90-86 victory over the Breds.

The Thorobreds are now 6-6 (6-6 SIAC) and take on the Albany State University Golden Rams at home on January 19, 2012 at 7:30 pm.
