Jackson, TN (October 29, 2011) – It was a shootout between The Kentucky State University Thorobreds and the Lane College Dragons. After 60 minutes of play, the Thorobreds defeated the Dragons 17-6 to give them a record of 6-3 on the season and 3-3 in the SIAC.
Kentucky State won the coin toss and elected to receive for the first half. Both offenses were unable to score on their first drives of the game. With 4:21 minutes left in the first quarter, Lane's Evan Yabu ran 49 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback, Ryan Bullock attempt for a two point conversion failed leaving the dragons on top of the Thorobreds 0-6.
The Thorobreds retaliated as the offense worked their way downfield. With 14:10 left in the first half,
Jerrel Noland threw an eight-yard pass touchdown pass to Troy Churchill.
Cade Berryman's successful kick put the Breds on top of the Dragons 7-6.
Raphael Amey set up a promising drive for the Breds with a 35 yard kick return and Noland capped it off by showcasing his rushing abilities as he ran for a touchdown with just 24 seconds in the half. Berryman capped off a booming first half with a made PAT, giving the Breds a 14-6 lead at the intermission.
With 2:57 left in the third quarter, Berryman scored the final points of the game with a good field goal.
Senior tailback,
Andrew Ramsey led the offense with 110 yards rushing, with a long of 20. Freshman,
Justin Williams rushed for 66 yards with a long of 44. Churchill had 77 yards and one touchdown, while Noland had 227 yards passing on 20-31 and one rushing and one passing touchdown. The Thorobred defense was led by Bernard Crawford with 8 tackles (6 solo), including one tackle for loss. Crawford also had one interception for a return of 32 yards.
The Kentucky State University Thorobreds will host Senior Day: The Victory Lap on Saturday, November 5, 2011 against Morehouse College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at KSU's Alumni Stadium.
