FRANKFORT, Ky. (October 11, 2011) – Kentucky State's volleyball team played their first home game in a non-conference match against Southern Indiana on October 11. The Thorobrettes went into the match with an overall record of 17-10, and the Screaming Eagles went in with an overall record of 11-5.
The Thorobrettes' starting setter, freshman
Jordan Foyer, was out this game due to a concussion that occurred during Saturday's game against Fairmont State University. Starting in her place was senior
Brittany Stewart, who was a key player in the Thorobrettes' SIAC Conference Championship last year.
The Thorobrettes struggled through the first game.
Erica Coleman had back to back kills in an attempt to liven the offense, but KSU was unable come back from their deficit. The Eagles took the first game 25-11.
The second game of the match was another difficult game for the Thorobrettes, as a lack of communication on the court caused unforced errors. Stewart continued to set the ball well, but USI's defense was too much for KSU. The Eagles went on to defeat the Thorobrettes in the second game 25-9.
In the third game the Thorobrettes started off in a point battle with the Eagles. They managed to stay close for the first half of the game, but the Eagles pulled away and won the third set with a score of 25-19.
Coleman led the Brettes with seven kills, followed by
Emily Grieshaber with six.
Ayanna Parker and
Audrey Sherles had four kills each, while Stewart amassed 19 assists and libero
Markeshia Williams had a team-high eight digs tonight.
The Thorobrettes are now 17-11 and the Screaming Eagles 12-5 on the season. KSU's next game is at Asbury University at 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 13.
