KSU Men Keep Winning, Defeat Albany State

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Thorobreds of Kentucky State won their third straight game tonight, defeating the Golden Rams of Albany State 75-66. With the win, the 'Breds improve to 6-1 (6-1 SIAC).

In a physical match-up, the 'Breds and Golden Rams traded points for most of the first half. With 12:25 remaining in the first half, KSU built their largest lead of the half, taking a 19-11 lead on two made free throws by Tony Johnson. The Rams fought back, and at the intermission, KSU's lead had dwindled to one point (30-29), as Brian Thornton knocked down a mid-range jumper to end the first half.

At the 16:25 mark in the second half, ASU went ahead 34-33, their first lead since 17:01 in the first half. Over the next four minutes, the Thorobreds went on a 16-5 run to take a ten-point lead (49-39) with 12:07 to play in the game. Each time the Rams pushed to make a comeback, the Thorobreds answered, draining key free throws and capitalizing on second-chance points. With :56 to play, KSU gained their largest lead of the game at 75-63.

Despite ending the game with an “and-one” play, the Rams' could not overcome their second-half deficit, as the Thorobreds came out victorious, capturing a 75-66 win.

ASU's Demarcus Blunt led the Rams with 17 points, five rebounds and three steals, while teammate Marcus Benitez added 14 points, six rebounds and three assists.

KSU was paced by Johnson, who scored 22 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists. Alex Somerville clocked a double-double with a season-high 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Kevin Smith drained 15 points, grabbed seven boards and had four assists.

The Thorobreds are on the road for the next two games, taking on Paine College on Saturday, January 8 at 3 p.m. and then Benedict College on Monday, January 10 at 7:30 p.m.
