William Exum served Kentucky State University from 1949 to 1980. He was chairman of the Department of Health. Physical education, recreation, and athletics director from 1949 to 1977. At times he was also track coach, tennis coach, and cross country coach. He coached the university’s Men’s Cross Country team when it won the NCAA College Division Cross Country National Championship in 1964. William Exum served as Assistant Manager of the USA Men’s Olympic Track and Field Team in 1972 and as the Head Manager of the USA team in 1976. He was a member of the Athletics Congress of the USA Olympic Track and Field Committee, the selection committee of the National Track Hall of Fame, and Chairman of the National Summer Youth Sports Administrative Committee. Many Organizations honored him, including the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Kentucky Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, the USA Olympic Committee, and the United States Track Coaches Association. On May 12, 1984, the Faculty and Board of Regents of Kentucky State University awarded him the honorary degree of Doctor of Science.Â
