Meade ‘Bernie’ Coleman Jr. begins his first year as Head Golf Coach for the Kentucky State University Thorobreds.  Before joining the KSU coaching staff, Coleman received a bachelor’s degree in Social Science with an endorsement in Secondary Education at Saint Paul’s College.  

While attending Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, VA, Coleman played for the Golf and Tennis teams. A standout player, he was voted MVP for the Golf team three times. He was also voted MVP for the Tennis team twice. Coleman multitasked during his matriculation at Saint Paul’s, as he was hired as an assistant varsity football coach at Brunswick High School. He was eventually promoted to Head Jr. Varsity Football Coach. By Coleman’s senior year at Saint Paul’s, he had advanced to become the student assistant coach for the SPC Lady Tigers.

After graduating from Saint Paul’s College with a degree in social science, Coleman was hired as the Head Tennis Coach at Virginia State University. He was also hired as the assistant coach for the women’s basketball team.  During Coleman’s two seasons as the Head Tennis coach, he led his teams to two 3rd place finishes in the conference. The women’s basketball won the Northern Division of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 2001 and 2002 and won the Conference Championship in 2002, leading to an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

After leaving Virginia State, Coleman returned to Brunswick High School to teach social studies and coach. He was head coach of the JV football team and Varsity assistant from 2003-2005. Also during this time, Coleman was the assistant Varsity boys’ Basketball coach and Head Junior Varsity boys’ basketball coach. Coleman took over as Head Girls Tennis coach from 2005-2008. Also during this time, Coleman was the Head Golf Coach at Brunswick High. While coaching the Golf team, Coleman led the team to three births in the regional tournament and, one player qualifying for the State tournament.

Coleman decided to leave his coaching positions at Brunswick High and return to Saint Paul’s, this time as the second assistant women’s basketball coach. During his tenure as assistant coach, Coleman coached the leading scorer in all HBCU women’s basketball, a young lady who was also an All-Conference student-athlete (2008-09 season). During the 2007-08 season, Coleman was part of coaching staff that boasted a student-athlete voted as the Times Dispatcher College Player of the Year.


Meade ‘Bernie’ Coleman Jr. is a very versatile coach, having experience in not only golf but also basketball, football, and tennis. Coleman also has experience with coaching not only Men but also women teams. He is a natural fit for the Head Golf coach at Kentucky State with his ability to lead and understand the student-athletes he coaches.

On a personal level, Coleman has three children and is married to Serena King-Coleman, who is the current Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Kentucky State University. Coleman’s Hometown is Warfield, Virginia.
