Strong Interior Play Not Enough as Thorobreds Fall to Benedict

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Despite a dominant performance on the glass and a double-double from Alycia Triplett, the Kentucky State women's basketball team fell to Benedict College, 78-53, in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action Friday afternoon at HRC Arena.

The Thorobreds controlled the interior for much of the contest, out-rebounding the Tigers 43-36 and holding a 28-24 advantage in points in the paint. However, a decisive third-quarter run by the hosts proved too much to overcome.

Amina Seck led the Kentucky State offense with an efficient performance, scoring a team-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and a 5-of-8 effort from the free-throw line. Seck also pulled down seven rebounds and added two blocks.

Triplett provided a massive spark off the bench, securing a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, including eight on the defensive end.

The game began as a defensive battle, with Kentucky State keeping pace with the Tigers throughout the first half. After trailing 17-16 after the first quarter, the Thorobreds stayed within striking distance, heading into the locker room down just three, 32-29.

However, Benedict broke the game open in the third quarter. The Tigers' offense exploded for 34 points in the period while their defense generated pressure that disrupted the Thorobreds' rhythm. Benedict utilized 22 steals on the day to generate 34 points off turnovers, a key factor in widening the margin.

Despite the pressure, Kentucky State continued to attack the rim, earning 27 trips to the charity stripe and converting 19 (70.4 percent). Amyah Adair-Mars contributed on the boards with eight rebounds to go along with six points, while Diara McBroom added three steals and three assists.

LEADERS
For the Thorobreds, Seck paced the offense with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Triplett anchored the paint with her 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. Adair-Mars added a strong presence on the glass with eight boards, and McBroom contributed across the box score with a team-high three assists and three steals.

On the Benedict side, Alaysia Nash led all scorers with 22 points, knocking down five three-pointers. Aaliyah Lawrence followed with 12 points and seven rebounds, while the Tigers' defense was sparked by Derricka Millinghaus and Gwendasia Page, who recorded six steals apiece. Millinghaus also facilitated the offense with a game-high six assists.
