ATHENS, W.Va. – Kentucky State women's volleyball closed out day two of the Concord Classic with a split, falling to West Virginia Wesleyan in four sets before bouncing back to defeat Davis & Elkins, 3-1, on Friday inside the Carter Center.
In the morning match, the Thorobreds opened strong with a 25-21 win in the first set against West Virginia Wesleyan. However, the Bobcats rallied to take the next three frames, 25-13, 25-18, and 25-9, to secure the 3-1 victory.
Cydne Clayton led the attack with eight kills, while
Randi Neal and
Leah Tubbs each chipped in offensively. Setter
Amber Gregory dished out 17 assists and served four aces, while defensively, Clayton added 10 digs and four total blocks. Kentucky State finished with 27 kills but was held to a .073 hitting percentage against a Bobcats squad that hit .281 overall.
Kentucky State regrouped in the afternoon, earning its first win of the season by topping Davis & Elkins in four sets. After dropping a tight opener, 28-26, the Thorobreds stormed back with set wins of 25-19, 25-14, and 25-17 to close out the match.
Freshman
Laila Wheaton paced the offense with a match-high 12 kills, six service aces, and four blocks, totaling 20.5 points. Neal anchored the defense with 18 digs to go along with nine kills, while Gregory handed out 17 assists and added five digs. Kentucky State out-dug the Senators 69-55 and limited them to a .058 hitting percentage.
