FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky State football held its first fall scrimmage at the end of Week 2 of fall camp as head coach
Felton Huggins Jr. and the Thorobreds continue preparing for the 2025 season, now just weeks away.
Entering Year Three
In his third season at the helm of the program, Huggins and his staff have added more wins each season, showing resilience as both the offense and defense experience highs while competing through the lows.
"Three years ago we would've never bounced back when the offensive or defensive made a bad play we would've went in the mud and that's kind of the immaturity we had. But this year the scrimmage went back and forth the defense had some highs the offense had some highs, but when they had lows they both continued to compete and that is the start of a really good ball club and I am so excited about where we are. We are light years ahead of where we were three years ago. We still have some cultivating and learning to do but we are on the right track right now." Huggins said following Saturday's scrimmage.
Transfers Make Impact Within the Offensive Unit
The transfer portal has had its effect on the Thorobreds offensive unit with multiple NCAA Division I transfers making an impact early in fall camp.
"Offensively, Jamarkius Garrett our transfer from Arkansas Pine Bluff has really came in and has been the tip of the spear for our offensive line, he brings leadership and is a hard-hat mentality guy. From day one, he has not only spoken up and been vocal but also led by example." Huggins said.
"Jon McCall is on the right page. He made some great plays today, and you can see his talent as a former Division I Southland Conference second-team all-conference wide receiver at McNeese State and we are excited to see what he has for us this season." Huggins said.
Intensity and Power on Defense
Just two weeks into camp, the defensive unit has been highlighted by the athleticism of Jordan Diggins and the energy of
Mataye Youman, as a group of Thorobreds spearheaded the defensive side of the ball.
"Jordan Diggins is probably one of the smallest defensive linemen in the league but he is one of the strongest he has quick hands and made an unbelievable pick when we were in the red zone getting ready to score so that was an amazing play." Huggins said.
"
Mataye Youman was a ball of energy, he flew around today and made plays, knows where everyone is supposed to be on defense and is a spearhead of the defense alongside
Kendrick Curry,
Elijah Henderson and Josh Woods. Those guys are really explosive and continue to set the tone on defense." Huggins said.
