SAVANNAH, Ga. – Senior
Mondrea Williams capped her season with a double-double as Kentucky State came up short against Savannah State, 66-47, in the first round of the 2025 SIAC Basketball Championship in Savannah, Georgia.
Williams recorded 11 rebounds and 10 points while adding three steals.
Senior
Naja Fenelon made five shots from the field to lead the Thorobreds with 12 points and five steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Thorobreds and Tigers traded baskets in a tightly contested first quarter, with the Thorobreds taking a three-point lead as Amayah Adair-Mars converted a fast-break layup to give Kentucky State a 10-7 edge at the 2:00 mark.
In the final minute,
Diara McBroom drove for a layup to briefly put the Thorobreds back in front, but a late three-pointer sent Savannah State into the second quarter with a 14-12 lead.
Late in the second quarter, the Tigers capitalized on a Thorobreds turnover, extending their lead to 32-22 at the 2:23 mark. Neither team scored for the remainder of the quarter, sending Savannah State into halftime with the 10-point advantage.
The third quarter was a low-scoring battle, but the Tigers capitalized at the free-throw line, going a perfect 6-for-6 to extend their lead to 44-31 heading into the fourth.
Savannah State continued their strong free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter, converting 11 of 14 attempts to secure a 66-47 victory.
Kentucky State finishes the 2024-25 season 9-17 on the season and 8-11 in SIAC play.
