DENMARK, S.C. – Kentucky State baseball split its doubleheader at Voorhees on Saturday, winning the first game 12-7 before falling 7-6 to the Tigers in Denmark, South Carolina.
GAME ONE: KENTUCKY STATE 11, VOORHEES 7
The Thorobreds tallied nine hits and 12 runs, highlighted by a six-run third inning and a four-run sixth. Voorhees managed eight hits but converted only seven into runs.
Zion Lewis scored the first runs for Kentucky State in the first inning.
The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second after an error by
Preston Jones allowed the tying run to score. A double in the next at-bat drove in another run, followed by a single to left field that extended Voorhees' lead to 3-1 through two innings.
In the top of the third, Christophel scored on a passed ball, and a single to center field by
Cedric Poellnitz brought home
Parker White and
Brad Dossett, giving the Thorobreds a 4-3 lead. The scoring surge continued as
Brady Wooldridge lined a hit into right field to drive in Kenyon Kemp, followed by a bases-loaded walk to
Preston Jones that allowed
Gavyn Minyard to score. The inning's final run came when Christophel reached on a Tigers error, allowing Wooldridge to cross the plate and extend Kentucky State's lead to 7-3.
Dossett continued to add to the Thorobreds lead with a single that batted in
Zion Lewis. With the bases loaded Woolridge was hit by a pitch that brought White in this was followed with a single from
A.J. Jackson that batted in both Garland and Dossett. The final runs for Kentucky State came as Jackson stole second and Wooldridge scored to.
Voorhees added two runs of their own at the bottom of the sixth but the Thorobreds were still able to maintain a 12-4 lead.
At the bottom of the seventh Voorhees scored an unearned run, Kentucky State would go on to win game one 12-7.
GAME TWO: KENTUCKY STATE 6, VOORHEES 7
Voorhees scored two runs at the bottom of the seventh to secure a walk off win of 7-6 in the final game of the series.
The Thorobreds first inning runs were led off on a single by Poelnitz that with the bases loaded brought in Jackson. Ryan Campbell hit a pop up to third base and allowed White to score and give Kentucky State an early 2-0 lead.
At the top of the fourth
Anthony Holt was walked with the bases loaded to bat in Campbell. The Tigers then walked White with the bases loaded to send Lewis home. Dossett reached first on error that allowed Garland to score. The Tigers were able to tie the game a 5-5 heading into the fifth inning.
Kentucky State's final run came as Wooldridge was walked with the basis loaded that sent Holt across home and put them ahead 6-5 through sixth innings.
Voorhees managed to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 7-6 walk off win.
