FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky State baseball edged out a 6-5 victory in game two, yet fell 1-2 in the series against Lane College.
Lane grabbed an early advantage with five first-inning runs, propelling the Dragons to a 15-0 shutout over the Thorobreds in the seven-inning opener of the series.
In the second game of the doubleheader the Thorobreds were able to strike first as
Jayden Clark scored on a wild pitch in the third inning.
The Dragons seized a lead with a three-run rally in the top of the fourth inning. However, Lane's advantage narrowed when
Cedric Poellnitz's fly to center field, coupled with a throwing error by the Dragons, allowed
Brad Dossett to score, making it a tight 3-2 game by the end of the inning.
Collier Higgs' right-field single drove
Isaiah Johnson home, knotting the score at 3-all in the bottom of the fifth. The Thorobreds then pulled ahead with
Mitchell Collins' single to left field scoring
Kelton Saylor and a two-RBI hit from Trevyon Fletcher to left center, bringing in Dossett and Higgs for a 6-5 lead.
Lane scored two runs at the top of the seventh but that would not be enough to steal the 6-5 Kentucky State win.
Eric Turner earned the win striking out seven batters while allowing only 3 runs and 3 hits.
Game three was a battle from the start as the Dragons scored two runs in the first inning that was responded with a homerun from
Parker White to close on the early Lane lead.
Kendall Garland hit a sacrifice fly into center field that sent Collins home and tied the game 2-2 at the end of the second inning.
In the third and fourth inning Lane added five runs to take an 8-2 lead. With the bases loaded at the bottom of the fifth Higgs was hit by a pitch that sent Garland across home to end the Dragons scoring run.
In the seventh, Collins' single scored Saylor Garland for a two-run boost. Poellnitz's right-side single in the eighth brought in two more, trimming Lane's lead to 8-7 by the inning's end.
Lane went on to score eight runs in the eighth inning and defeat the Thorobreds 12-7 and take the series 2-1.
