FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky State baseball team secured victories in the opening games against Tuskegee, taking game one 9-4 and game two 12-8 (7 innings) in a doubleheader held Friday at Western Hills Baseball Field.
Game 1: Kentucky State 9 – Tuskegee 6
Tuskegee struck first at the top of the second inning and
Treyvon Fletcher lined out to send one run in and tie the game at 1-1 through two innings.
Brad Dossett singled into left at the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 2-2 through four innings.
With two on base at the bottom of the six
Collier Higgs homered to bat in three runs.
Mitchell Collins followed with a single into centerfield to send in one and give the Thorobreds a 6-3 lead after six.
Strong offensive play continued for the Thorobreds with a homer by Dossett into left field to add two runs.
Preston Jones singled into left field to send the final runs across home giving the Thorobreds a 9-3 advantage.
Tuskegee scored the final run at the top of the ninth inning which wasn't enough to overthrow the Thorobreds 9-4 lead.
Dashawn Hureskin earned the win pitching 8.2 innings including 11 strikeouts in 41 batters faced.
Game 2: Kentucky State 12 – Tuskegee 8
Collins sent the first run in on single into leftfield at the bottom of the first, the scoring continued as
Danzel Lucas singled sending Collins in and giving the Thorobreds a 2-0 lead after three innings.
Tuskegee jumped ahead 3-2 at the top of the fourth but
Kelton Saylor would score on wild pitch to tie the game 3-3 at the bottom of the inning.
Saylor singled to right field to send in one a sacrifice fly by
Parker White added another run to put a total of two runs on the board in the fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Thorobreds delivered a formidable offensive performance. A crucial homer by Higgs, coupled with a pair of runs scored on a passed ball, propelled the team forward. Dossett's single into centerfield sealed the deal, bringing in the final run for the Thorobreds and widening their lead to 12-4 as the sixth inning concluded.
