FRANKFORT, Ky. – In a thrilling second game of the doubleheader, the Kentucky State softball team fought back from a deficit by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure a hard-fought 9-8 victory over the Asbury Eagles, leading to a split doubleheader.
Asbury scored the first runs of the contest on a double down the left field at the top of the sixth inning. Kentucky State's
Maleah Murphy was able to score on a wild pitch. The Eagles would go on to win the first game 2-1 with five hits and three errors as the Thorobreds tallied three hits.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Thorobreds emerged victorious over the Asbury Eagles with a score of 9-8.
The Eagles got off to a strong start, scoring two runs at the top of the first inning. While Kentucky State managed to hold off their opponents for a while, as the Eagles added another run in the fourth inning and two more runs in the fifth inning to build up a sizable lead.
Kentucky State refused to go down without a fight. They scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to narrow the Eagles' 5-2.
In the sixth inning, the game truly took a dramatic turn, the Eagles managed to score three runs in the top of the sixth inning, extending their lead to 8-2. However, Kentucky State dug deep and mounted an incredible comeback. They scored an impressive seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, bringing their total score to nine and securing a hard-fought victory over their opponents.
Kentucky State was led by Taylor Floyd, who went 2-of-3 at the plate to earn two RBIs alongside her teammate
Kayla West.
Tanisha Valdez finished the second game with two hits and one double.
At the end of the doubleheader, head coach David Morton said, "We had talked all week about fighting no matter what the score and no matter what the situation was that we needed to keep our energy up and we need to keep going. Luckily in the sport, hitting is contagious, and it just takes one person for everyone to jump on board."
