FRANKFORT, Ky. – A double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds by
Laurie Thomas excels Kentucky State women's basketball to a 73-67 victory inside the Exum Center Saturday afternoon.
Three Thorobreds scored in the double figures,
Gracen Kerr (14 points),
Taleah Dilworth (14 points), and
Sydney Thomas (13 points).
The lead changed, and the game tied 14 times as the Thorobreds held the lead for 28:29 (71.2%) of the contest.
How It Happened
Kentucky State tied the game 4-4 early in the first quarter (6:52) by Thomas. They would earn their largest lead of five (10-5) on a layup by Dilworth. Miles scored the final points of the quarter to close on the 12-8 Kentucky State first-quarter lead.
The Golden Bears tied the game 12-12 with 8:44 remaining in the second quarter. Miles would jump ahead for a brief moment before Thomas tied the game 14-14 on a layup at 6:10. The Kentucky State lead was ended as Miles tied the game 16-16. Dilworth made a layup to tie the game 18-18 as 2:58 remained in the quarter.
Five points from
Laurie Thomas led to a 9-0 run to give the Thorobreds a 27-20 lead at the half.
Kerr hit a three-pointer at 6:23 in the third quarter giving Kentucky State a ten-point 34-24 lead.
The Thorobreds got hot late, going 4-of-5 from the field to end the third with a 49-45 lead.
Miles went 1-of-2 from the free throw line to tie the game 49-49; Kerr responded with a three-pointer to give her team a 49-52 lead in the fourth quarter. The Golden Bears would jump ahead 55-54 as
Sydney Thomas made both free throws to gain back a 55-56 lead with 6:04 remaining in the first half.
Kentucky State kept the Golden Bears scoreless for over two minutes to go on a 10-0 run to extend their lead 64-57 with 1:45 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Thorobreds would go on to win the game 73-67.
