SAVANNAH, Ga. – Kentucky State women's basketball falls to Edward Waters 67-62 at the 2023 TIAA SIAC Basketball Championship presented by Cricket Wireless in Savannah, Georgia.
Gracen Kerr led the Thorobreds with 13 points, followed by both
Taleah Dilworth and
Nina Blade with 12 points each.
Hilani Cantone also scored in the double digits with 11 points.
How It Happened
Dilworth tied the game 4-4 on a layup at 7:14 in the first quarter.
Kerr made a three-pointer to start a 5-0 Kentucky State run with 6:55 remaining in the first quarter.
Jasmine Elder followed with a layup to give the Thorobreds a 10-8 lead as the Tigers tied the game 10-10 at 1:56 remained in the first quarter.
Naja Fenelon made both free throws to close not the six-point 28-22 Edward Waters lead with 2:30 left in the second quarter.
The Thorobreds trailed the Tigers 32-26 at the end of the first half.
Kentucky State went 3-of-3 from the field to go on a 6-0 run led by four points from
Laurie Thomas to come within two of the 32-30 Edward Waters lead early in the third quarter.
A layup by
Lauren Powell brought the Thorobreds to within one of 33-32 Edward Waters lead.
A 10-2 run and two made free throws by Kerr tied the game 34-34 at 7:03 in the third quarter.
Kerr then hit a three-pointer to extend their lead 39-34 while on a 17-4 run at 5:10 in the third quarter.
A pull-up jump shot by
Hilani Cantone extended the Kentucky State to a 19-4 run and a 41-34 lead at 4:21 in the third quarter.
Edward Waters hit a three-pointer to tie the game 53-53 with 6:24 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers tied the game again 57-57 on a layup at 3:47 in the fourth quarter.
A late 11-2 run by Edward Waters in the fourth quarter led them to a 67-62 victory.
Kentucky State finished the 2022-23 season with a winning record of 16-11. "We had a great regular season. But when you get to a stage like this, you don't have time for distractions, and you got 15 players, and they all must be locked in." Head Coach Terrance Slater said following the game.
