ATLANTA – Kentucky State football spoils homecoming for the Morehouse Maroon Tigers with a 23-21 victory Saturday afternoon inside B.T. Harvey Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
On offense, the Thorobreds succeeded with 150 passing yards and 144 rushing for 295 total offensive yards. This effort was led by 150 passing yards, 13 completions, and one touchdown by Navy Curry. He found Jonathan Howard four times for a total of 74 yards and Jude Santana for 49 yards on four receptions. Isaiah Saleem continued to stand out with 102 rushing yards, a long of 31 yards and one touchdown.
Dontavius Broadnax stood out on defense with one interception for 15 yards, one sack for nine yards, and three tackles for a loss of 17 yards to lead the Thorobreds with five tackles.
In the fourth quarter things got tight buy Coach Huggins and staff challenged their team. "We challenged our guys to finish what we started and be the most exciting team on the field. When it counted, we did that our defense was their neck they made a stop and the end of the game on fourth down when we needed one. I am so proud of guys that we got this win today." Coach Huggins said.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Morehouse scored the first points of the afternoon on an eight-yard run to take a 7-0 lead at 7:00 in the first quarter.
Curry punched one into the endzone to tie the game 7-7 on a 15 play, 71-yard drive early in the second quarter (13:30).
Mason Molique found the uprights on a 42-yard field goal to give the Thorobreds a 10-7 with 6:31 remaining in the second quarter.
The Thorobreds scored as Curry connected with Bryce Boby Hayes to extend their lead 17-7 at halftime.
At the end of the third quarter (0:39) Saleem scored on a 31-yard rush to extend the Thorobreds 23-7 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Morehouse tried to rally in the fourth scoring two touchdowns, but a huge Kentucky State fourth down conversion in the fourth quarter secured a 23-21 Kentucky State victory.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Thorobreds will end their 2023 season hosting rival Central State on Saturday, Nov. 4 with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. inside Alumni Stadium. Prior to kickoff Kentucky State will celebrate their seniors.
