FRANKFORT, Ky. – Second-half adjustments were not enough as the Delta State Statesman defeated the Kentucky State Thorobreds 33-10 in the 2022 season opener.
In the opening drive,
Jaylen Johnson intercepted Cole Kirk to earn the first interception of the season.
Delta state scored early on a 61-yard pass to Todd Battle, and a short run by Kory Gainwell almost extended the Statesmen lead to 14-0, but a block by
Elijah Grant kept Delta state to a 13-0 lead with 9:54 left in the first quarter.
Kendon Walker scored a touchdown on a lengthy 49-yard rush, and a good kick by
Mason Molique closed on the 13-7 Delta State lead.
The final score of the quarter came on a 27-yard field goal by Nick Herber, extending the Delta State 16-7.
Delta State scored twice in the second quarter, giving them a 26-7 lead going into halftime.
The game's final touchdown came on a short run by the Statesmen extending their lead to 33-7.
Mason Molique hit a 38-yard field goal late in the third quarter, putting the final points on the board for both teams. Delta State would defeat Kentucky State 33-10 at the end of regulation.

Malik Occiur forced a fumble, and Johnson earned an interception. As a team, the Thorobreds led the game with six pass breakups.
