Thorobreds Show Strengths in Loss to Delta State

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Second-half adjustments were not enough as the Delta State Statesman defeated the Kentucky State Thorobreds 33-10 in the 2022 season opener.
 
In the opening drive, Jaylen Johnson intercepted Cole Kirk to earn the first interception of the season.
 
Delta state scored early on a 61-yard pass to Todd Battle, and a short run by Kory Gainwell almost extended the Statesmen lead to 14-0, but a block by Elijah Grant kept Delta state to a 13-0 lead with 9:54 left in the first quarter.
 
Kendon Walker scored a touchdown on a lengthy 49-yard rush, and a good kick by Mason Molique closed on the 13-7 Delta State lead. 
 
The final score of the quarter came on a 27-yard field goal by Nick Herber, extending the Delta State 16-7.
 
Delta State scored twice in the second quarter, giving them a 26-7 lead going into halftime.
 
The game's final touchdown came on a short run by the Statesmen extending their lead to 33-7.
 
Mason Molique hit a 38-yard field goal late in the third quarter, putting the final points on the board for both teams. Delta State would defeat Kentucky State 33-10 at the end of regulation.
 
Positive Takeaways
Kentucky State's offense stayed true to their ways, rushing Delta State 235-165 and leading the contest with 18 first downs. Walker led the contest with 108 rushing yards 101 all purpose yards, his teammate Christopher Coneway rushed for 81 yards. Jaylen Myers completed 100% of his attempts (7-of-7) for 38 yards with a long of 19.
 
Eldridge Dockery III led both teams with one sack for a four-yard loss on the defensive side. Dockery III and Johnson tallied three tackles for losses for nine yards. Malik Occiur forced a fumble, and Johnson earned an interception. As a team, the Thorobreds led the game with six pass breakups.
