Cincinnati, Ohio – Today was a special day commemorating the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson making his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947.
Kentucky State Baseball wore Negro League Jerseys to celebrate Jackie Robinson's 75th anniversary of his MLB debut in a doubleheader against Spring Hill College at the Cincinnati Reds Youth Academy in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Head Coach Robert Henry, " Jackie Robinson Day is important because we tend to forget who came before us and paved the way and made things better. Celebrating and commemorating Jackie Robinson 75 years later it's great for our university to be a part of that. We are very appreciative of everyone that made this happen."
The Thorobreds wore an authentic game jersey from numerous Negro League teams. The Negro League was composed of different black-only baseball leagues beginning in the late 1800s that included the Southern League of Colored Base Ballists, the National Colored Base Ball League, and the Eastern Colored League, to name a few.
Nike Baseball and Ken Griffey Jr. presented the team with limited edition Ken Griffey Jr. cleats before the games begun.
It was a tough day for Kentucky State as Springhill took the first game 0-15 after seven and the second 4-13 after seven innings.
Three Thorobreds earned hits during
Jared Pierce,
Dom Lawson, and
Adren Thompson during the first game.
Late in the second contest,
Kelton Saylor scored the first run on a wild pitch.
Aram Kumar reached on a fielder's choice that sent Thompson across home plate. The third run of the fourth inning would come on a wild pitch, and the final run was by Kumar, who scored on the double by
Jared Pierce. The Thorobreds would fall to the Badgers 4-13.
The Thorobreds will close out the series on Saturday, April 16, at Alumni Field in Frankfort, Kentucky. The first pitch is set at noon.
