COLUMBIA, SC – Kentucky State Baseball scored 56 runs in a two-game series with SIAC opponent Benedict College.
Game 1: Kentucky State 19, Benedict 16
In the first contest, the Thorobreds dominated the contest with a whopping 18 hits and 19 runs while keeping their errors at a minimum of two. Benedict earned nine hits and scored 16 runs with two errors.
Adren Thompson led the first game by earning five of Kentucky Stats 16 RBIs; he went six of four from the plate earning four runs and earning the only home run of the contest.
Five Thorobreds crossed home plate in the first inning,
Jared Pierce,
Collier Higgs, Bryon Famble,
Roby Schank, and Thompson.
Kentucky State added to their lead in the second inning scoring six runs. The offensive effort was led by Thompson, who had a three-run home run and two runs batted in by Pierce. Benedict scored two runs, but the Thorobreds would maintain an 11-2 lead after two innings.
The Thorobreds added three runs in the third inning, and the Tigers would attempt to match, scoring two runs.
Kentucky State added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and kept Benedict to just one run in the two innings.
In the sixth inning, the Thorobreds would score three runs to complete the contest with 19 runs.
Benedict would attempt to rally in the seventh inning scoring 11 runs, but that wasn't enough to overcome the 19 point Kentucky State lead.
Game 2: Kentucky State 37, Benedict 5
The second game was a high-scoring affair for the Thorobreds, earning 37 runs and 26 hits with just three errors, while the Tigers scored five runs with seven hits and six errors.
Kentucky State went through the lineup, and some in the second inning scored 12 runs. Famble saw the batter's box twice and went for a double in the first attempt and a single in his second. Pierce had a strong hitting performance with a triple along with a single.
Success continued in the following inning, Thompson hit for a double, allowing two runs to score and a pair of Thorobreds advancing on a pair of bad pitches. The Tigers earned three errors in that inning to help Kentucky State take a 20-1 lead at the top of the third.
Kentucky State would tally seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings, with Famble leading the charge with a single to center field running two batters in. The Tigers would score their final run at the bottom of the sixth to secure five runs during the contest.
The Thorobreds would put the dagger in the Tigers in the seventh inning scoring ten runs. Lawson hit a single in his first at-bat in the inning, sending one runner in and a double in his second go-around to send two runners home. Pierce would secure an unearned run late in the seventh inning to secure a 37-35 victory.
