COLUMBIA, S.C. – A last minute three from
Gracen Kerr wasn't enough to overcome the Benedict Tigers as they defeated Kentucky State 68-64 in overtime Monday evening in Columbia, South Carolina.
Kentucky State outscored Benedict College three straight to send the game into overtime. An early 12-0 run helped the Tigers to a 16-10 first quarter. The Thorobreds led the second 12-11, the third 20-17, and the fourth 16-14.
Gracen Kerr led the Thorobreds with 21 of the Thorobreds 64 points.
Hilani Cantone had a double-double of 12 points and ten rebounds. She also led her team with three rebounds.
Taleah Dilworth scored in the double digits with 12 points.
How It Happened
The Benedict Tigers got ahead early on a 12-2 run giving them a 14-4 lead with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter.
Six made free throws made by Kentucky State ended the run and brought the Thorobreds to within six of 16-10 Benedict first quarter lead.
Benedict's long-range jumper gave the Tigers an 11 point 21-10 lead early in the second quarter(9:13).
Two made layups by
Gracen Kerr brought Kentucky State within three of the 21-18 lead with 4:28 remaining in the second quarter.
A good jumper by Cantone closed on the 25-22 Benedict lead. The Tigers responded with a layup to hold a 27-22 at the half.
Cantone went straight to the paint seconds into the third quarter (9:53) to score and close on the 27-24 lead.
Naja Fenelon hit a three pointer to tie the game at 35-35 with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter. She gave the Thorobreds a one point 37-36 lead on two made free throws.
With just a second remaining in the third quarter Kerr hit a three pointer to give the Tigers just a two point 44-42 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Four points from Dilworth in the final moments tied the game 58-58 with just 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.
Ja'Nia Thompson made opened overtime with a made free throw to give Kentucky State a 59-58 lead.
The Tigers gained back the lead, but Cantone answered with two made free throws to lead 61-60 with 3:03 remaining in overtime.
A short run by the Tigers gave them a 61-67 lead with just under thirty seconds remaining in overtime. Benedict was able to fend off Kentucky State and win the game 64-68 in overtime.
