NASHVILLE – A 21-point Kentucky State run in the second half, led by 12 points from
Nya Caruthers alongside a fourth-quarter fight by the Thorobreds, wasn't enough as Kentucky State women's basketball fell 65-60 to the Trevecca Trojans Saturday afternoon in Nashville.
Taleah Dilworth scored the first points of the contest on a driving layup. Turnovers cost the Thorobreds early, with the Trojans scoring eight points from turnovers. Trevecca took the first quarter 17-9.
Trevecca hit a three-pointer to extend their lead by 17 points (31-14) at 4:48 in the second quarter. A three-pointer by
Laurie Thomas and a layup by Dilworth closed on the 31-19 Trojan lead with 1:35 remaining in the second quarter. Two made free throws by the Trojans gave them a 33-19 lead going into halftime.
On a free throw, the Trojans extended their lead to a 21-point, 48-27 lead near the end of the third quarter.
Victory Vincent scored on a jump shot to close on the 48-32 at the end of the third quarter.
The Thorobreds battled in the fourth quarter, going on a 21-2 run that brought the game to within one of the 58-57 Trojan lead on a good jump shot by
Laurie Thomas. As a team, Kentucky State outscored Trevecca 28-17, led by nine from Caruthers. The Trojans would hold off the Thorobreds and win the game 65-60.
Caruthers led the Thorobreds with a season-high of 15 points, making 75% of her three-pointers in the second half. Dilworth went 6-of-8 from the charity stripe to score 11 points and Thomas nearly had a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Kentucky State will travel to Atlanta, Georgia, on Wednesday, January 4, for a 5 p.m. tipoff against SIAC opponent Clark.
