The Kentucky State University baseball team celebrated Senior Day in grand fashion with a walk-off win, followed by a rout in sweeping the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from Benedict College at Alumni Park Sunday.
Sunday marked the final home game for seniors
Joe Crisp (Shelbyville, KY),
Jay Poullard (Louisville, KY),
Russell Sims (Harrodsburg, KY),
Bryan Wilson (Chattanooga, TN),
Jordan Ransom (Ringgold, GA),
Artie Santomo (Florence, KY) and
Cameron Starks (Alpharetta, GA).
GAME ONE: KENTUCKY STATE 5, BENEDICT 3
Ransom blasted a one-out, two-run walk off homerun over the left field fence to cap a three-run comeback, giving Kentucky State the 5-3 win.
Not only did Ransom homerun give the Thorobreds the victory, it helped erase the visions of the constant inability to hit with runners in scoring position. Kentucky State went 0-for-10 with RISP over the first five innings, including twice with runners on third base and nobody out.
After not getting a hit over the first three innings, the Tigers broke out in the fourth inning as the first seven batters reached, six via hits, to score three runs. The damage could have been worse but junior
Brandon Mason (Chattanooga, TN) cut down a potential run at the plate, and Wilson hosed a stolen base attempt at third.
Before Ransom enabled the home fans to celebrate the game one victory, freshman
Jace Wilson (Shepherdsville, KY) kicked off the comeback. The second baseman recorded his first career extra base hit, doubling home a pair of runs in the sixth inning, and then he raced home with the tying run on a Sims double.
Wilson recorded his first career multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and two RBI. Sims finished the game 2-for-3 with a double, triple and RBI, while Starks was 2-for-3.
Crisp (6-4) hurled his NCAA Division II leading 10th complete game, allowing three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
GAME TWO: KENTUCKY STATE 9, BENEDICT 2
Kentucky State sent 12 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring eight runs, and secured the sweep with the 9-2 victory.
After getting set out to an eight-run lead, junior
Brady Bibbs (Hornersville, MO) did the rest on the mound. The right-hander was fantastic in allowing just one hit over five innings. His best work came in the fourth inning as the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs. Unbothered, Bibbs got the first out on a strikeout, induced a shallow fly and then another fly out to keep Benedict off the board.
Bibbs takes the SIAC lead with eight victory to take an unbeaten record into the conference tournament.
Wilson continued his offensive surge, going 2-for-2 with a double, run scored and career-high three RBI. It was just the second multi-hit game of his career.
Junior
Chance Egnor (Shepherdsville, KY) snapped a 0-for-14 streak with a second-inning single to start the eight-run rally, and then capped the second-inning scored with an RBI single. He registered his first three-hit game of his career, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
