Nationally ranked Patriots knock off 'Breds

The Kentucky State University baseball team ran into a buzz saw of an offensive ball club, falling to #7 University of the Cumberlands, 16-4, in non-conference action Wednesday at Alumni Park.

Six different Thorobreds registered hits in the loss, including back-to-back extra base hits to scratch across the team's first run. Junior Brandon Mason (Chattanooga, TN) doubled off the centerfield wall, and then easily scampered home on a triple by senior Jay Poullard (Louisville, KY). A single by senior Cam Starks (Alpharetta, GA) scored Poullard from third.

Kentucky State scored two more runs in the fourth as junior Jordan Ransom (Ringgold, GA) scored on a RBI groundout by Kevin Givhan II (Chicago, IL), and a throwing error enabled senior Bryan Wilson (Chattanooga, TN) to score.

Cumberlands scored in each of the first four innings, including a six-spot in the fourth. The Patriots hit six homeruns in the game and finished with nine extra base hits.

Sophomore De'Nayus Johnson, 1-3, (Detroit, MI) took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits with four walks and a strikeout in two innings of work.

Kentucky State (18-14-1 overall) returns to Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with a four-game weekend series against Tuskegee, beginning with a doubleheader noon Saturday.
