WILMORE, KY – The Kentucky State University softball team scored 17 runs in two games to sweep a non-conference doubleheader from Asbury University Wednesday.
GAME ONE: KENTUCKY STATE 10, ASBURY 1
Behind the strength of a seven-run fourth inning, the Thorobreds came back from an early deficit to secure the victory.
Back-to-back two-out singles by freshman
Olivia Steward (Salem, IN) and junior
Sasha Allen (West Covina, CA) got the rally going and an error loaded the bases. Freshman
Janae Graham (Morehead, KY) brought home a run with walk, and then two more runs scored with a single by senior
Natalia Bocanegra (Covina, CA).
Another error extended the inning for consecutive singles by sophomore
Moana Pinner (Hilo, HI) and freshman
Olivia Saylor (Lancaster, KY) to cap the scoring.
Kentucky State pushed the game past the run-rule limits with three runs in the sixth inning.
Three players – Bocanegra, Saylor and senior
Jackie Zubiate (Riverside, CA) - all tallied two RBI, while Bocanegra and Zubiate scored two runs each.
Senior
Paola Flores, 4-7, (San Lorenzo, PR) allowed one earned run on four hits in six innings of work.
GAME TWO: KENTUCKY STATE 7, ASBURY 4
The Thorobreds scored five runs over the first two innings, and held on for the 7-4 victory.
A two-out single by Steward brought home the three first-inning runs. Bocanegra tallied an RBI single in the second, and then came home to score KSU's fifth run on a double by Zubiate.
Asbury scored a single run in the bottom of the second, and an RBI single by Steward got the run back in the fifth inning.
A one-out home run in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Eagles some momentum, and then a two-out, two-run single brought Asbury to 6-4 with the tying runs in scoring position with just one out.
However, freshman
Katelyn Hurley, 4-1, (Elizabeth, IN) bore down and got out of the inning with a fly out and ground out. She allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
The Thorobreds added an insurance run in the seventh inning as Saylor scored on an error.
Steward finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Bocanegra and Zubiate was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Bocanegra scored twice and Zubiate also scored a run.
Kentucky State (10-12 overall) hosts a four-game home Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series with Tuskegee University. The Thorobreds will kick off the series 1 p.m. with a doubleheader.
