JASPER, AL – Freshman
Katelyn Hurley threw a gem, and the Kentucky State University offense gave her plenty of run support as the Thorobreds opened Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Friday with a 14-0 victory over Paine.
"Today was a good day for us to get back in the swing of thing," said Kentucky State University head coach
David Morton. "The girls did a good job of making adjustments and attacking. Hurley showed up big for us today and pitched a great game. This puts us on the right path for the upcoming games."
Hurley (Elizabeth, IN) yielded just one hit, a fourth-inning single, with four strikeouts over five innings to pick up her second win of the season.
Kentucky State pounded out 17 hits in pushing 14 runs across the plate, 13 of which came in the first two innings. KSU tallied three runs in the first, 10 in the second and capped the scoring with a single run in the third.
Five Thorobreds finished with multi-hit games with three players collecting three hits on the day. Senior
Natalia Bocanegra (Covina, CA) reached base five times, going 3-for-3 with two triples, three runs scored, two RBI and two walks.
Sophomore
Moana Pinner (Hilo, HI) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, while freshman
Olivia Saylor (Lancaster, KY) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Senior
Jittaun Thompson (Pomona, CA) was 2-for-3 with a pair of triples, two RBI and a run scored, while senior
Jackie Zubiate (Riverside, CA) added a 2-for-5 game with two runs scored and an RBI.
Kentucky State (6-10 overall, 1-0 SIAC), ranked third in the most recent HBCU Softball Division II poll, plays Benedict (#10 HBCU Division II Top 10) 11 a.m. EST and Albany State (#4 HBCU Division II Top 10) 4:30 p.m. EST as the Thorobreds continue play in the SIAC Crossover.
