FAIRFIELD, ALA. - No one game defines the successes of a single season, and despite falling from contention for the West Division crown following the 17-0 loss to Miles on Saturday, the Kentucky State University football team still has a chance for an historic season.
A winning season for the first time since 2011, and record the highest winning percentage in 40 years are still in play for the 2019 Thorobreds.
Miles tallied passing touchdowns in each of the first two quarters, and added a field goal in the third quarter for all of the scoring.
Kentucky State had a couple of chances to dent the scoreboard in the second half. After a 25-yard run by redshirt junior
Brett Sylve (Hammond, La.) moved the Thorobreds to first and goal from the six, Kentucky State had its pass fall incomplete on fourth down in the end zone and freshman kicker
Jonathan Jerry (Tallahasee, Fla.) missed a 47-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Part of Kentucky State's problems stemmed from the inability to convert on third and fourth downs, going 2-of-14 on the game.
Sylve finished with 67 yards on 15 attempts, while redshirt sophomore quarterback
Jaylen Myers (Maryville, Tenn.) was 3-for-7 passing for 36 yards.
Defensively, Kentucky State was led by senior
Myrthel Stewart (Glenwood, Ill.) finished with a team-high seven tackles, while freshman
Nigel Cochran (Woodruff, S.C.) added five tackles and a pair of pass breakups. Junior
Xavier Johnson (Lexington, Ky.) and junior
Antwoine Lloyd (Indianapolis, Ind.) also contributed five tackles. Sophomore
Andrew Perkins (Detroit, Mich.) recorded his team-high second interception of the season.
Kentucky State (5-3 overall, 3-3 SIAC) travels to Wilberforce, Ohio 1 p.m. Saturday for its rivalry game with Central State.
