CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Senior
Jessie Kee drilled a three-pointer as time expired to send the game into overtime, however, the Kentucky State University women's basketball team was outscored 9-2 in the extra session to fall in non-conference action to Charleston, 71-64, Monday.
Kentucky State had the chance to win the game in regulation, but Kee missed the free throw with no time remaining.
The Thorobreds went 0-for-2 from the floor, 2-for-4 from the foul line and committed six turnovers in the five-minute extra period.
Consecutive baskets by senior
Carnethia Brown (Louisville, Ky.) gave Kentucky State its biggest lead of the game, 14-5. The lead remained around the nine-point margin for the rest of the first quarter. However, a bucket by Charleston at the end of the period, coupled with a mini-spurt to start the second quarter pulled the home team even.
Both teams went on spurts, Kentucky State pushing the lead to seven and Charleston pulled to within two at the break. With the exception of a 19 second span, KSU maintained its lead for the entire third quarter and when the third period dust settled – the Thorobreds led by seven.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Charleston knotted the score. For the remaining five minutes, there were three ties and three lead changes.
Kee (Indianapolis, Ind.) shot 5-of-7 from the field for 11 points and four rebounds, while Brown was 4-of-10 from the field for 11 points. Senior
Amani Williams (Scotch Plains, N.J.) scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Junior
Allenia Ponder (Smyrna, Ga.) stuffed the stat sheet for Kentucky State with six points, seven steals, six assists, five rebounds and a block.
Kentucky State (2-2) comes home for the first time this season, hosting Georgetown College 6 p.m. at the William Exum Center.
