K-State goes 4-1 in Cluster

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Kentucky State University volleyball team continued their impressive play in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action this past weekend at the SIAC West Division Cluster, hosted by Lane College.

Kentucky State went 4-1 during the cluster with its only loss coming at the hands of Spring Hill College. In their four victories, the Thorobreds won all 12 sets.

The Thorobreds have won 22 straight SIAC games against teams not named Spring Hill. Kentucky State has secured the West Division's second seed in the SIAC conference tournament.

KENTUCKY STATE 3, LANE 0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-14)
Kentucky State opened SIAC Cluster action with a straight set win over the Dragons Thursday.

Ten of the 11 players recorded a kill with junior Robin Poole (Katy, Tex.) and freshman Brianne Etienne (Houston, Tex.) tallied team-high with eight kills. Junior Sasha Bills (Mesa, Ariz.) tallied 26 assists, while junior Oyuky Benitez (Laveen, Ariz.) had a team-high six digs.

Senior Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, La.) was a force at the net with four solo blocks and a block assist.

SPRING HILL 3, KENTUCKY STATE 0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-15)
Moten was solid offensively with eight kills on 22 attempts and just one error for a hitting percentage of .318. She added three blocks, one solo and two assisted blocks.

Meanwhile, Poole led the team with nine kills on 25 attempts and three errors. She contributed four digs.

Defensively, Benitez finished with 16 digs to lead the team and sophomore Jalyn Barnett (Detroit, Mich.) added seven digs.

KENTUCKY STATE 3, TUSKEGEE 0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-8)
Poole tallied her first double-figure kill match of the cluster with 10 kills on 16 attempts and just one error for a .563 hitting percentage. Freshman Miana Wallace (Lees Summitt, Mo.) and Moten added five kills each.

Bills continued to pace the offense with 17 of the team's 31 assists.

Kentucky State finished with 11 blocks with Roberts leading the way with four, all block assists. Wallace added three blocks, one solo and two block assists in the match. Benitez tallied 11 digs, while Poole contributed nine digs.

KENTUCKY STATE 3, LEMOYNE-OWEN 0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-13)
For the seventh time this season, Bills dished out at least 20 assists in leading Kentucky State to the victory. She had 20 assists and five digs. Barnett had 11 assists for the Thorobreds.  

Poole had double-digits kills for the second straight match with 11 kills on 24 attempts with five errors. Benitez tallied 12 digs and three assists, while Barnett chipped in with nine digs.

KENTUCKY STATE 3, MILES 0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-18)
Benitez is a force for the Thorobreds defensively with a team-high 17 of the team's 45 digs, while Bills led the team with 19 of the team's 34 assists.

Moten led the team with nine kills on 14 attempts with one error for a .571 hitting percentage. Poole contributed eight kills on 19 attempts and two errors for a .316 hitting percentage. Wallace added seven kills.

Kentucky State (17-9 overall, 14-2 SIAC) travels to Central State 7 p.m. Wednesday in SIAC action.
