FRANKFORT – A couple of streaks came to an end Saturday as the Kentucky State University football team exploded for 21 fourth-quarter points en route to the 35-24 victory Saturday over Clark Atlanta in the 2019 Homecoming game at Alumni Stadium.
The victory marked the first Division II win of the season, while snapping a nine-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference losing streak and a nine-game losing streak within the confines of Alumni Stadium.
Redshirt junior
Brett Sylve (Hammond, La.) was instrumental in bringing the victory home to the Homecoming fans. He racked up 178 yards on 28 attempts with three fourth-quarter touchdowns. Sylve had touchdown runs of five, eight and 41 yards. As a team, the Thorobreds ran for 276 yards on 60 attempts and four rushing scores.
A slow start for both team continued deep into the second quarter, and KSU dug deep into the playbook to finally put points on the board.
Junior running
Brendan Lawler (Clarksville, Ind.) connected with senior
Jonathan Powell (Greenville, Ala.) with a 35-yard touchdown with 1:52 remaining in the half. It was the third touchdown reception for Powell this season.
Clark Atlanta pulled even with a scoring pass before freshman
Chris Coneway (Stockbridge, Ga.) plunged in from one-yard away to give the 'Breds a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Panthers got a 22-yard field to get within four points. It was the closest they would get.
Sylve tallied back-to-back scores in the fourth quarter for a 28-10 lead.
Coneway finished with 43 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.
Junior
Jaylen Myers (Maryville, Tenn.) finished 3-for-5 passing for 25 yards. Powell had two catches for 48 yards and senior
Jordan Level (Detroit, Mich.) had two catches for 12 yards.

Antwoine Lloyd (Indianapolis, Ind.) led the team with nine tackles, seven solos, a forced fumble and a pass breakup. Junior
Kalmorris Robinson (Macon, Miss.) added six tackles with two for loss.
Kentucky State (3-2 overall, 1-2 SIAC) travels to Jackson, Tenn. for another SIAC contest 3 p.m. EST Saturday.
