Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

'Breds lead wire-to-wire, upset Miles

FAIRFIELD, AL – A 16-4 run in the fourth quarter run gave the Kentucky State University women's basketball team the boost they needed to pull the 57-42 upset victory over Miles College Monday in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the Knox Windham Gym. (Post Game Interview)

The game-changing run coincided with the Thorobreds changing their defense, limiting Miles to just 2-of-11 from the floor and forcing six turnovers. While the KSU defense was smothering the hosts, the inside duo of senior Brooke Wallace (Oberlin, OH) and junior Kiante Butts (Memphis, TN) combined to score 12 of the team's 16 points.

For the entirely of the fourth quarter, a period in which the 'Breds opened leading by just five, Kentucky State held the Golden Bears to just 23.5 percent (4-of-17) shooting and didn't send them to the line.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak, all in SIAC road games, and brought to the end a stretch of conference gamse in which the Thorobreds played eight of their first nine on the road.

Kentucky State scored nine of the first 11 points of the game, and led for the entire 40 minutes in sending Miles to just their second SIAC loss of the season.

KSU's lead grew to as much as 12 in the second quarter before the Golden Bears made things interesting. Miles scored 10 consecutive points over a stretch of more than six minutes to get its deficit to two points, but a late basket seemingly stemmed the tide.

Coming out of the locker room, Kentucky State's defense was suffocating as MC managed just one point over the first five minutes of the third quarter, opening up an 11-point lead. Miles had one last run in them, cutting into the KSU lead – and with 3:42 remaining – the 'Breds led by just three.

However, every time Miles got the game to within one possession, Kentucky State had an answer.

Wallace recorded her tenth double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds, marking the second straight game she has pulled down 15 boards. Sophomore Erica Jones (South Haven, MS) added 13 points and seven rebounds, while junior Jessie Kee (Indianapolis, IN) finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Kentucky State (9-8 overall, 3-6 SIAC) will have a week off before returning to the hardwood with a 7:30 p.m. Monday game against Spring Hill. It will kick off a stretch of four consecutive home games as KSU ends the season with home games in seven of the last nine games. Fans are encouraged to wear green to support the Thorobreds.
