Thorobreds drop season opener at #6 Charleston Southern

Box Score

Charleston, S.C.—Kentucky State University football dropped its season opener to 6th ranked Charleston Southern University 57-7 on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.

"We played an awfully good football team," said head coach John L Smith. "The first game is always a barometer. We didn't execute, we have to learn from it and get better, real quick."

Senior running back Reginal Harris shined for the Thorobreds racking up over 100 all-purpose yards with 76 rushing and 32 receiving. The play of the day came with Harris lined up at tailback with a little over four minutes left to go in the 1st half. Following blocks set by the sophomore right guard and senior right tackle Michael Moaga, Harris sprang loose for a 42-yard scamper scoring KSU's lone touchdown.

Junior defensive end Rodriquez Jones accumulated 10 tackles in his first game as a Thorobred. The transfer from Hampton University added a sack, a pass breakup, and a forced fumble. Senior safety Raymond Malone accounted for seven tackles and recovered a fumble in the end zone, forced by Jones at the one yard line.

The Thorobreds will head to Morehouse College on Sept. 10 for a 2:00 p.m. ET kickoff.
