Frankfort, Ky.—Kentucky State University football will open up the regular season on the road against Charleston Southern University at Buccaneer Field on Saturday; kickoff is slated for 11:45 a.m. ET.

The Thorobreds return 22 contributors from the 2015 campaign, including 11 starters. Leading the way for KSU on the offensive side of the football is newly appointed team captain, junior quarterback Ora "Bo" Johnson. During his sophomore campaign, Johnson passed for over 800 yards while rushing for nearly 400 yards, totaling nine touchdowns.

Located behind Johnson will be a tandem of talented tailbacks in senior Reginal Harris and graduate transfer from Western Kentucky University Darmontre Warr.

"We'll need to establish the running game for us to be successful throughout the season," said head coach John L Smith. "Harris and Warr gives us several options and the opportunity to spread the field."

In 2015 Harris tallied five touchdowns, while rushing for 700 yards and nearly eclipsed 1,000 total yards.

Defensively the Thorobreds will turn to senior linebacker Travon Spencer. In the last three seasons Spencer has accumulated over 180 tackles, stockpiling more than any other Thorobred over the same time span.

"Travon relishes the position of being a leader and it comes natural to him," said Smith. "He's vocal, he's out front, and he isn't afraid to grab someone by the facemask and shake them up."

Saturday's contest will be the first of the John L Smith era at KSU and video streaming coverage will be provided by the Big South Conference.
