Frankfort, Ky. – Kentucky State University football suffered a heartbreaking loss to fellow SIAC member Benedict College on "Senior Day", at Alumni Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Senior running back
Reginal Harris recorded a career-high 229 yards of total offense (195 rushing, 34 receiving) and scored three total touchdowns, while junior running back
Lavelle Cloyd added 87 yards on the ground and scored his second rushing touchdown of the season for the Thorobreds.
Senior linebacker
Travon Spencer became the first player in KSU history to record 100 tackles in a season following his nine tackle performance while junior defensive lineman Rodriguez Jones added a game-high two sacks to go along with his eight and a half tackles.
KSU (4-6, 4-3) jumped out to an early lead after Harris broke free on the first play of the game to score a 48-yard rushing touchdown to give the home squad a 7-0 lead. The Tigers tied the game up at seven following a 22-yard pass into the end zone from freshman quarterback Phillip Brown to junior wide receiver Okechi Ntiasagwe with 11:14 remaining in the first quarter. The tie was short-lived as Cloyd broke free for a 27-yard rush with less than three minutes remaining in the first stanza.
The Thorobreds tacked on to their lead after Harris snagged a five-yard touchdown reception from freshman quarterback
Jules St. Ge just seven seconds into the second quarter to make the score 21-7. St. Ge tossed his second touchdown of the contest later in the quarter, launching a 55-yard pass downfield to sophomore wide receiver
Demetrius Anderson, extending the lead to 28-7. Benedict rushed for another touchdown with 3:08 on the clock till halftime, giving KSU a 28-14 lead.
KSU saw the lead shrink following an 11-yard rushing score by the Tigers, cutting the lead to just 28-21 with a little over five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Harris' career night continued as he earned his third touchdown of the afternoon with a 30-yard scamper to extend the KSU lead 35-21.
The Thorobreds' momentum faded as Benedict scored three straight times to pull off the comeback with a final score of 39-35.
KSU outperformed the Tigers offensively, outrushing them 316-290 while tossing 31 more yards in the air, 140-109.
The Thorobreds will face-off against Fort Valley State University, in hopes of earning their first SIAC championship in the Crampton Bowl game next Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET in Montgomery, Ala.
