Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The Kentucky State volleyball team dropped its second straight match after winning six in a row over the weekend, falling 3-0 to Centre College on Tuesday at the Exum Center.
Despite the sweep, all three sets were closely contested, with the Colonels winning 25-20, 25-17, and 25-23. The Thorobrettes led as late as 17-16 in the first set, only to see Centre take back the lead with three straight points and close the set out by outscoring Kentucky State 9-3.
The second set started out going back and forth, but after a kill by
Anjelique Kyle and a Centre attack error put Kentucky State up 6-5, Centre seized the momentum. The Colonels won the next eight points and led by as many as 10 at 18-8. The Thorobrettes battled back, eventually cutting the margin to 21-15 after three straight points, but it was as close as they would get in the set.
The third set was the most closely contested of the three sets, featuring nine lead changes and neither team holding a lead of more than three points. The Thorobrettes led at 19-18, only to see Centre go on a 5-1 run for a 23-20 lead. Kills by Kyle and
Micah Rogers and a Centre attack error helped Kentucky State tie at 23, but the Colonels were able to take the final two points to seal the victory.
Rogers finished with team-highs of nine kills and 13 digs to lead Kentucky State, while
Kirtrice Ploucha added seven kills. Kyle led the team with 18 assists. Centre's Beth Cecil led all players with 10 kills, while teammate Elizabeth Janszen had a game-high 29 assists.
Kentucky State drops to 12-5 on the season with the loss, while Centre improves to 8-8 overall. The Thorobrettes travel to Lewis University for the weekend where they will face Saint Joseph's College, Lewis, and University of Indianapolis over two days.Â
