Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Kentucky State got started the right way in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament, cruising to a 3-0 win over Benedict in a first round match on Wednesday at the Birmingham Crossplex.
The Thorobrettes controlled the match throughout, sweeping the three sets by the scores of 25-15, 25-10, and 25-13.
Tahje Ochs led the way for Kentucky State in the match with 10 kills and a .400 hitting percentage, while also recording four blocks.
Kirtrice Ploucha and
Payton Richardson each added six kills, with Richardson hitting .500 and also recording four blocks.
A day after being named as the SIAC's Setter of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year respectively,
Anjelique Kyle led the Thorobrettes with 26 assists and a game-high four aces, while
Kiara Rivera picked up a team-high 13 digs.
The Thorobrettes left little doubt in any of the three sets, jumping out to early leads and pulling away in all three. Kentucky State used a 6-0 run to get out to a 12-4 lead in the first set, then used a 5-0 run to go up 9-2 in the second. In the final set, Kentucky State used three separate 4-0 runs to go up 13-4 early on.
With the result, Kentucky State improves to 22-12 on the season, while Benedict falls even at 16-16. Both teams are still alive in the double elimination tournament, where the Thorobrettes will open Thursday's play against Albany State at noon Central Time.
