FRANKFORT, Ky. - The Kentucky State University athletic department recently held its annual athletics banquet to honor this past year's accomplishments by its student-athletes, coaches and staff.
The banquet was held on April 22, 2013 in the Carl M. Hill Student Center on the KSU campus.
Lydia Travis, Assistant Director of Athletics for Internal Relations and Senior Woman Administrator, presided over the banquet. Athletic Director, Dr. Denisha Hendricks, and University President, Dr. Mary Evans Sias, also spoke at the banquet.
Each sport gave out individual awards ranging from most improved athlete to player of the year. The athletics department also handed out awards such as men's and women's player of the year and for team with the highest GPA.
Senior
Carlos Ware, a defensive end on the Thorobred football team, was honored as the 2012-2013 Male Athlete of the Year. Ware finished this season as the SIAC leader with nine sacks and was named to the SIAC All-Conference First Team. Ware also received recognition on the 2012 Daktronics All-Region Team, the HBCU Classics All-American First Team and the All-Commonwealth First Team.
Senior Sharnita Lloyd was awarded the 2012-2013 Female Athlete of the Year distinction. Lloyd led the KSU women's basketball team in scoring, averaging 16.7 points per game, while also maintaining a 4.0 GPA this year. Lloyd was named to the 2013 SIAC Women's Basketball All-Conference Team as well as the SIAC Women's Basketball All-Academic Team.
The women's volleyball team was honored with the Team Highest GPA Award.
Sophomore Alexander Davie was given the distinguished 2012-2013 Dr. Mary Evan Sias Excellence in Leadership Award for his leadership qualities not only on with baseball team but off the playing field as well. Davie served as the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President for the 2012-13 academic year. He spear headed a number of community service activities and increased the overall participation in SAAC. He was named to the SIAC Pre-season All-Conference Team and one time player of the week. Davie is a biology major and holds a 3.6 cumulative GPA.
