FRANKFORT, Ky. (August 24, 2012)- Kentucky State University (KSU) Director of Athletics, Dr. Denisha L. Hendricks, announced today that KSU and Albany State University (ASU) have agreed to play in the 2012 Chicago Football Classic at Soldier Field. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Central Time on Saturday, September 29.
“We are very excited to play the Golden Rams in the Chicago Football Classic,” said Hendricks. “It will be a great experience for our student-athletes to play in a historic venue like Soldier Field and we hope our alumni and friends of the University will come cheer us on.”
Last year the Thorobreds and Golden Rams met in Indianapolis, Ind. and battled in a record-setting Circle City Classic. Senior
Raphael Amey set the Circle City Classic records for the most receptions with 14 and the most reception yards with 234 yards.
Keith Massey set the Circle City Classic record for the most individual return yards with 243. Together, Amey and Massey set the Classic record for the most return yards with 266 yards. Both teams joined together in the Classic record for the most return yards, both teams with 441 yards. Quarterback
Jerrel Noland set the Circle City Classic record and for most passing attempts with 65 and tied the Classic record for the most completions with 36.
“The 2011 game between these two teams was energetic and extremely competitive,” Hendricks affirmed. “We expect more of the same this year in Chicago.”
In 1997, a small local group of African American businessmen- Larry Huggins, Everett Rand, Tim Rand, and (later) William “Bill” Garth- formed the Chicago Football Classic (CFC) as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to encouraging African American youth to achieve their personal best in school and beyond. CFC events influence students and parents to consider the rich academic and cultural opportunities offered by Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Tickets for the Classic, which range in price from $15 to $40, are available for sale at KSU's Department of Athletics (in Bell Gymnasium). The Soldier Field seating diagram is attached.
