Kentucky State Wins Big in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Kentucky State Thorobreds traveled to Augusta, Ga. this weekend to take on conference foe, Benedict College, in the 2010 Augusta City Classic. In a thrilling game, the Thorobreds scored 20 unanswered points to defeated the Tigers 26-21 and improve their record to 2-1 (2-1 SIAC).

KSU got off to a sluggish start, falling behind 0-14 in the first quarter. The Thorobreds scored their first touchdown on a 19-yard pass from Jerrell Noland to Jovan Washington (PAT kick missed), bringing the score to 6-21. With just 00:38 to play in the first half, the Tigers struck again on a 9-play, 78-yard drive to go up 21-6 at the half.

The Thorobreds received the ball to begin the third quarter and found the end zone on a one-yard run by Shannon Frieson (PAT kick good by Chris Spalding, 13-21). The Tigers punted on their next two possessions and on their third possession of the half, KSU scored on a one-yard run by b>Anthony Boykins (PAT kick good by Spalding, 20-21).

KSU's defense dominated the fourth quarter, allowing a mere 20 yards of offense by the Tigers in the period. After a KSU punt, the Tigers began driving from their own 10-yard line, but on their first play, Michael Adams fumbled and KSU's Derrick Addai recovered at the BC 7-yard line. The Thorobreds, however, were unable to punch it in, and turned the ball over after Noland's fourth-down conversion pass to Washington went incomplete.

With 4:42 to play in the game, Benedict was forced to punt again, hoping their defense would hold KSU. The 'Breds had different plans. KSU started their last possession with 4:42 seconds to play and drove 61 yards in 1:47 to take a 26-21 lead. Troy Churchill had one of the biggest plays of the game, catching a 21-yard pass from Noland to put the Thorobreds at the BC 3-yard line. Noland scored on a quarterback sneak from the BC 1.

The game was sealed with 00:43 to play when KSU's Keith Massey intercepted Adams at the KSU 39-yard line. In thrilling fashion, the Thorobreds left Augusta victorious. Boykins was named MVP after rushing for 107 yards on 19 carries. Defensive lineman Stephen Scarborough had a game-high 9 tackles, while grabbing an assisted sack for loss of two yards.

Up next for the Thorobreds is a night game at Morehouse College (3-0). Game time is 7 p.m.
