FRANKFORT, Ky. - Kentucky State University's football team traveled to Tuskegee, Ala. to play SIAC fourth placed Golden Tigers, and after four quarters, the Thorobreds were defeated 21-45.
The first quarter began with two quick scores by the Golden Tigers, taking a 13-0 lead with 6:43 to play in the period. KSU held them the remainder of the quarter but was unable to find the end zone. Six seconds into the second quarter, Tuskegee's
Stephen Freeman scored the Golden Tigers' third touchdown of the day on a nine-yard rush, putting TU up 20-0.
KSU's first score came at the 8:47 mark in the second quarter on a 2-yard run by
Shannon Frieson (PAT good), bringing the score to 7-20. The last minute of the first half was filled with excitement with a touchdown by TU with 30 seconds to play (2-yard run by
Nykeem Barton), followed by a 10-yard touchdown reception by KSU's
Julian Brown. Down 14-27 at the half, the Thorobreds went into the locker room inspired to continue their passionate play.
The only score of the third quarter went to KSU on a 9-yard pass from
Jerrel Noland to
Jovan Washington (PAT good), bringing the 'Breds within six (21-27). On TU's next drive, Barton rushed for 61 yards to the KSU 5-yard-line, but KSU's
Dae'Ron Williams forced a fumble, recovered by teammate
Grandson Brown. The Thorobreds, however were unable to capitalize on the turnover, going three-and-out and giving the ball back to TU on a 43-yard punt by Chris Spalding.
The Golden Tigers profited from KSU miscues and scored three times (two touchdowns and a field goal) in the fourth quarter, ballooning the score to 45-21, a deficit from which the Thorobreds were unable to recover.
The loss drops KSU to 3-7 (2-6, SIAC), while Tuskegee improves to 7-2 (6-2 SIAC).
KSU's last game of the season is in Tuscaloosa, Ala. against Stillman College (1-8, 1-7 SIAC) at 5 p.m. (CST).
