KSU Gridironers Fall to Eastern Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. - In an intrastate battle against Eastern Kentucky, the Thorobreds fell to the Colonels 7-58. EKU built a 38-0 halftime lead, and would score again on their opening drive of the second half to extend their lead to 45-0. The Thorobreds, however, would not be shut out. With 7:34 to play in the third quarter, the Colonels started driving from their own 24 yard-line with a 45-0 lead. Carlos Ware forced an EKU fumble, which was recovered by teammate James Swanson. KSU took over at the EKU seven yard-line and scored on a two-yard rush by Andrew Ramsey.

For the second week in a row, KSU's Derrick Addai led the Thorobred defense with a game-high 11 tackles (9 solo) and three total tackles for loss of nine yards, including one sack for loss of three yards. This week, we get a special inside recap of the game, courtesty of the KSU Thorobred Newspaper.

Josh Jackson (of KSU & EKU transfer)
We tried. We played as good as we could tonight and we're much better as a team. We just have to play a complete game. Most of our games this season we haven't played a complete game. We're getting there we just gotta keep working hard and learn from our losses.
Preparation for the game:
I figured they would try to run the ball a little more on offense and probably try some different stuff they haven't tried during the season. You saw a couple of different looks from them. Like usually they don't run the ball as much and you saw them running the ball a lot tonight.

On Central State game:
We're learning from our mistakes which is a good thing...I think we're going to go up there and do what we need to do. It's all in the preparation and we've been trying to prepare better so that when we get to the game we don't have mistakes. Usually we're shooting ourselves in the foot. If we just prepare a little bit better and minimize our mistakes and we're gonna come out with a "W".They're not much different from us...We didn't play like we're supposed to play. We have a lot of talent on the team and we need to live up to our potential. and it comes from preparation.

Coach Wayne Dickens:
General Thoughts on the game.
We came in to measure ourselves against a 1AA opponent. There's a reason why there's 1-AA football and division II football. If you're a Division II program and you walk into an arena against a 1AA program you know that you may be out-manned in some areas. You may be out-manned in every area. I don't think we were out-manned in every area but we made far too many critical mistakes that you can't recover from.

What areas were we not out-manned
It didn't rain the whole game! I was pleased at our will. Our determination. When games tend to get out of hand people can find a way to not quite play hard and our guys didn't do that. That's something to build on. Our guys can clearly look back and measure themselves against the opponent tonight. As we move back into division II play next week it will give us a little bit more resolve to not give away those games.

On KSU's one score
Our guys wanted not to be shut out. You never want to be shut out of a game and so we clawed and scratched and pounded the ball on the ground. We've got 3 good running backs and at the 6th game of the season everybody's dinged up. We found a way to string together a few plays and pound it into the end zone.

Martez James came
We've got 3 quarterbacks on our roster. One is a true freshman who a year ago was playing right down the road at Berea High School. So we've got two QB who carry the load for us and that's where we are. We have who we have. We don't have 6 of them. So it's not a question of how comfortable I am with them. I'm comfortable with the guys I've got. And they're gonna line up and they're gonna play. And at times, yeah they're gonna make a mistake.

On the 3 Running back system
They each take turns. They each get turns by series unless something happens where they have to come out in the middle of a series. All 3 of them are talented guys. All three of them have rushed for 1,000 yards at Kentucky State. They all have enough skill to be in that kind of rotation. There 3 different running styles, 3 different running types, 3 different body types, and we're gonna play all three of them.

Lessons learned from EKU game
They learned up close and personal the different between those two divisions. They learned where they are and where they need to get to be to be the best football players they can be. They learned that they can't make mistakes when they're in tough like that. They've got to get a keener focus. A myriad of things... one is that they have to score more points than the other guy. You can't slip and fall down, you can flat out blow a block, you can't have missed exchanges. There are a myriad of things we did wrong. They did nothing to cause those things. We did them wrong. Those things you can't do when you're in an extremely competitive situation like this one.
