Hyacinth Garrison was a phenomenal track and field athlete from Norfolk, Virginia. She was named to the Virginia High School Athletic Association All-State Team and was awarded All-American honors during her senior year in High School.

During her sophomore year at KSU, Hyacinth developed into a world class high jumper. She went on to earn All-American Honors in the High Jump in 1985 by the United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

After Hyacinth Sophomore year, she had a major setback because of injuries. Struggling to re-turn, she had two knee surgeries. Admittedly, she was unsure if she would ever compete again. But Hyacinth was determined and motivated to continue her dream as a top high jumper in America. She went home, set new goals, starting training and kept a positive attitude. All of this paid off as she returned her senior year to complete at the highest level.

In March of 1987, she attended the NCAA Division 2 Indoor National Championship at North Dakota State University. “Hi-C”, the nickname she earned as being a great high jumper at KSU, went into the Championship more motivated and determined as ever to win her event. She not only won her event to become the NCAA Division 2 National Champion, she broke the NCAA Division 2 National high jump record with the jump of 5’8.”. This accomplishment also made her the first female athlete in KSU history to win an individual national champion-ship. To this date, no other female has won a national championship, individually, from KSU.

Hyacinth has earned one national championship with a national record, two NCAA All-American honors and three Athletic Letters from KSU. She also was awarded the Most Valu-able Athlete award in 1987 at the All-Sports banquet. She will always be considered one of the best female athletes in KSU history.

Hyacinth currently resides in Indianapolis, Indiana.
