Serena King-Coleman took the reins of the Thorobrettes program prior to the 2010-11 season.
King-Coleman, who is entering her sixth season as head women’s basketball coach, has a 75-62 overall record at Kentucky State.
In the 2013-14 season, King-Coleman led the Thorobrettes to a berth in the SIAC Championship Tournament as the number two seed out of the West Division after finishing with a 12-15 overall record and 7-9 in the SIAC. KSU was led by SIAC All-Conference members Shayla Moore and Brieona Warner. Moore was also named to the All-Academic team with a 3.38 GPA. The Thorobrettes were ranked 8th among NCAA DII programs with 5.1 blocks per game and 12th with 11.4 steals per game.
On January 27th, 2014, King-Coleman picked up her 100th career victory when the Thorobrettes defeated the LeMoyne-Owen Lady Magicians, 64-61, in Memphis, TN.
King-Coleman is professionally involved at both the conference and regional levels. She is the acting WBCA Division II Conference Captain for the SIAC as well as a member of the NCAA DII Regional Ranking Committee.
She came to KSU from St. Paul’s College where she served as Senior Woman Administrator and Assistant Athletic Director (2007-2010) and Head Women’s basketball coach (2004-2010). In 2008, King-Coleman coached the first CIAA Player of the Year in school history. She was three time CIAA Coach of the week in 2008-2009 and coached the first student-athlete to receive Daktronics Honorable Mention All-American. Coleman also coached the first St. Paul’s student-athlete to receive Daktronics Second Team All-Atlantic Region.
During the 2007-2008, King-Coleman received the CIAA Sportsmanship Award. She coached and graduated a 3-year player who was fifth in scoring 1034 points, first in assists and second in steals in St. Paul’s school history and graduated third in her class. In 2005-2006, King-Coleman coached an all-conference player who was voted Times Dispatcher College Player of the Year in the state of Virginia and Leading Scorer in all of Black College.
From 2003-2004, King-Coleman was the Interim Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Gardner-Webb University. The season prior she held the position of Associate Head Women’s Basketball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator.
A member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), King-Coleman was inducted into the Class of 2010 10th Region Hall of Fame for the State of Kentucky girls high school basketball. She is a 2009 NACWAA/HERS Institute graduate. She also received the Marian Hanna Satcher Student Retention Award in 2009. In 2011, she participated in the Achieving Coaching Excellence program and over the summer of 2012, served as a facilitator for the same program.
A firm believer in giving back to and being involved in the community, King-Coleman has led her team to several community service and engagement activities. The Thorobrettes are regularly spending their time volunteering in the community and have established strong relationships with organizations such as the Girl Scouts, Access Soup Kitchen and several elementary schools in Frankfort, Ky.
King-Coleman played college basketball for UNC-Greensboro from 1993-1997 where she earned Big South All-Rookie honors and her Bachelor of Arts in English degree in 1998.
King-Coleman and her husband Meade have three children, Symphonie, Madison, and Aria and reside in Frankfort.
